Ladder Paradox (or barn pole paradox)

Ladder Paradox (or barn pole paradox)

S  -  Ep  -
 -  min
A ladder fits inside a garage which would normally be too small to contain it.
The ladder paradox (or barn-pole paradox) is a thought experiment in special relativity. It involves a ladder, parallel to the ground, traveling horizontally and therefore undergoing a Lorentz length contraction. As a result, the ladder fits inside a garage which would normally be too small to contain it. On the other hand, from the point of view of an observer moving with the ladder, it is the garage that is moving, so it is the garage which will be contracted to an even smaller size, thus being unable to contain the ladder. This apparent paradox results from the mistaken assumption of absolute simultaneity. The ladder fits into the garage only if both of its ends are simultaneously inside the garage. In relativity, simultaneity is relative to each observer, and so the question of whether the ladder fits inside the garage is relative to each observer, and the paradox is resolved.

"The Lady, or the Tiger?" is a much-anthologized short story written by Frank R. Stockton for publication in the magazine The Century in 1882. "The lady, or the tiger?" has come into the English language as an allegorical expression, a shorthand indication or signifier for a problem that is unsolvable.

The Marshalls - widowed ranger father Rick, and his two children Will and Holly - are on an outdoor expedition like they have many times before. While rafting on this trip, an earthquake opens up a chasm resulting in them tumbling across some raging rapids and over an unknown waterfall. They end up alive but in a world unfamiliar to them, a world they will ultimately coin the Land of the Lost. It is inhabited by creatures some they have never seen or heard of, and some which no longer exist in the world they knew back home, creatures such as dinosaurs. They will find that some of these creatures are friendly, and some of them which they need to stay away from for their lives. As they eke out a life in this strange land, they try to understand what got them here so that they can make their way back home, that process which is fraught with its own dangers based on the unknowns of what is on the path to home. What they are also initially unaware of is that Rick's brother, fellow ranger ...

Among the things they find are what looks to be a temple, and footsteps. Will is able to send a message back to Rick via Morse code to meet them. However, Will and Holly come across something else, namely English words scrawled into a stone face wall, the words being "Beware the Sleestak". Before they are able to meet up with their father, Will and Holly are abducted by three upright lizard looking creatures, who they assume are the Sleestak, and of who Cha-Ka is scared. While the three Sleestak hold Will and Holly over a pit with an unseen creature below, Cha-Ka is able to get Rick, the two who hope to save Will and Holly from whatever fate the Sleestak have for them.

A troublesome baby brontosaurus follows Will and Holly home. While she and Will are out alone doing some work, Holly notices something that Will believes is just a big green rock. Upon closer inspection, they find it is a freshly hatched egg, presumably some sort of dinosaur egg. They soon find out that it was indeed a dinosaur, a brontosaur. After arguing about the situation, they decide to name the baby brontosaur Dopey, since brontosaurs are notoriously clumsy and this one, as a baby, doesn't seem too bright. Regardless, Holly gets attached to Dopey, and after feeding him some of the giant strawberries they harvested, they end up having trouble getting rid of it. That isn't a problem for Holly as she'd like to keep Dopey as a pet, and attempt to train it to do some work. However, Rick doesn't believe it's such a good idea, as Dopey is still a 5,000 pound animal, and one that doesn't understand much. In addition, Dopey could be a liability as an extra mouth to feed, and an animal that could attract a hungry carnivore like Grumpy.

The Marshalls attempt to escape the Land of the Lost by river and wind up trapped in a cave with a daffy Confederate miner. Rick's latest idea to get home is for them to build a raft. He figures the swamp must empty out into a river which will take them to an ocean and civilization. The first half of the thought is indeed correct as they are able to find a river. However, they approach a waterfall, which they just manage to avoid, but which their raft does not survive. Through a hole in the cliff wall, they are brought into a series of tunnels. In the previous experiences, a series of tunnels generally means the presence of Sleestak. What, or more precisely who they find in the tunnels however is Jefferson Davis Collie III, an old Confederate soldier. After both sides getting over the shock of seeing the other, the Marshall family enters into a barter of sorts with their new acquaintance: work by the Marshalls for food. What he wants is for them to mine for crystals, the ones in this tunnel which are the same as they have seen elsewhere, but larger. The Marshalls' main goal still is to find where the river...

He is in possession of a device called a megeti, that if they know how to use it may be able to get them home. However, Enik warns them that he doesn't know if it can get them home as he doesn't know where home is for them.
