Phil, Helen and Terry next arrive in 1565 during the Great Siege of Malta, as the Castille of Birgu is under siege from the invading forces of the Ottoman Empire. Here Terry and Helen meet the Knights Hospitallers' Grand Master, Jean Parisot de la Valette, and the elderly Sir Hugo de Roth Ð Rothgo in disguise. Meanwhile, Phil is captured by a janissary, Hassam Ali, and brought before the Great Mustapha Pasha in the Turkish camp; Pasha is taken with the boy, and orders that Ali train him as a soldier, but as Phil leaves, he sees that Pasha's woman, Salimar, is Belor in disguise. Pasha is frustrated that his forces are unable to breach the Castille's walls, and quickly warms to Belor's proposal that he build a huge, wheeled tower to scale the building's walls; construction begins immediately, and it is not long before the assault is mounted. Arriving in ancient Egypt, Phil, Helen and Terry immediately encounter Princess Nataken Ð Belor in disguise Ð who accuses them of robbing the tomb of King Tutakhamun. After her guards arrest the children, Nataken transforms Helen and Terry into birds and locks them inside a small cage; she then threatens to leave them like this forever unless Phil helps her with her plan to become empress of Egypt. Elsewhere, Lord Ai Ð the late king's Chamberlain, and this era's Rothgo Ð busies himself with overseeing Tutakhamun's burial; Ai is deeply concerned that the deceased pharaoh's widow, Queen Ankhensepaten, will lose her rightful claim to the throne due to the machinations of her sister, Princess Nataken. Recognising Rothgo, Phil attempts to call out to him, but Nataken steals his voice and imprisons him within a statue. The evil witch gloats over her possession of four fragments of the Nidas, revelling in the fact that when she locates the final piece, her power will be unchallenged, finally allowing her to defeat Rothgo. Meanwhile, Lord Ai finds Terry and Helen trapped inside the aviary, but his magic is not enough to break Belor's spell. Ai confronts Nataken, who now has Phil under her spell, and is calling him her son; ignoring her sister Ankhensepaten's protests that her real son died stillborn, Nataken decrees that Phil be made pharaoh, an act that will allow her to rule through him as empress. Rothgo tries to stop the evil witch, but her power is too strong; all seems lost Ð has Belor finally won the fight for supremacy over Rothgo..?

When a mysterious call for help draws Phil to Glastonbury Tor, he enters the tower and immediately falls into a void. Landing inside a dark cave system, Phil expects to meet Rothgo, but instead finds the putrefied corpse of a man covered in green slime, and an overconfident, bumbling, magician named Lazlo. The wizard immediately grabs Phil and asks him to heal his slime-covered hand, but this act only succeeds in infecting Phil too. Lazlo explains that he and his kind are alien to the time track Phil has fallen into; prolonged exposure to this environment causes them to decay, and Lazlo's only chance to escape to his proper time zone lies with his magical bracelet. When Lazlo reveals that a pirate named Long John Silver has stolen the bracelet's power source, known as the Scarabeus, Phil is shocked to find that in this world, fictitious characters are real Ð and that he has become trapped in ÔTreasure Island'. After agreeing to help Lazlo search for the Scarabeus, Phil is captured by Silver and his men, while the cowardly Lazlo flees for his life. Phil is thrown into a cell, where he meets a young girl called Amy Foster, daughter of the captain of the sailing ship, ÔThe Hispaniola'; it seems that Silver has taken the child hostage so that he can trade her for the treasure that her father currently holds, in a fort constructed on the island above them. Meanwhile, Lazlo is attacked by a strange old man, dressed in rags and carrying an old skull; when the magician uses his powers to defend himself, he inadvertently releases Belor from her imprisonment within the skull. Delighted to be free, the witch offers Lazlo the opportunity to serve her in a plan to take over all the time tracks in existence; when Lazlo refuses, the enraged witch swears to destroy himÉ

However, he is unaware that Belor is watching through the eyes of a skull; when Phil leaves to search for the Scarabeus, the witch materialises and imprisons him in a block of ice, and although Hyde manages to free himself, he is then scattered to the four winds by the sorceress. Lazlo informs his friend that the Scarabeus is hidden amongst a hoard of Inca gold, which the local tribe has hidden to keep it safe from the approaching Spanish army. Lazlo then entrusts his magic bracelet to Phil, and together they set off in search of the Scarabeus, unaware that they are being watched by Belor. Disguising herself as the Princess Lakiki, the evil witch meets with Don Philippe and Don Rodriguez of the Spanish army, offering to help them find the hidden gold in exchange for just one item of treasure: the Scarabeus; it seems that the gold is soon to be removed from its hiding place for inclusion in the Ceremony of the Sun, a religious rite in which a chosen victim is sacrificed to the Incas' sun god. Exploring the caves, Phil and Lazlo meet the reluctant victim, a young girl named Chiquitta, who takes Phil to be a prince because of the royal bracelet he wears. The trio are interrupted by the arrival of the Spanish officers, who want retribution after Father Llewellyn sold them barrels of earth instead of gunpowder. Lazlo and Phil beat a hasty retreat as the soldiers approach with swords drawn; in the confusion Phil drops the bracelet, which is promptly seized by Belor's servant, Bram Ð however, instead of giving the object to his mistress, Bram decides to use its power for his own endsÉ

Mistaken for the imp that supposedly started the conflagration, he is captured by the Lord Mayor, Sir Thomas Bloodworth, and his soldiers; however, when the real Ôimp' Ð Belor's lackey, Bram, wearing a hooded mask Ð runs past, the soldiers promptly release Phil and give chase. Phil then meets Lazlo; in this time zone the magician is Thomas Farriner, royal baker to King Charles II; however, Thomas is also under suspicion, as the inferno raging overhead somehow started in his bakery. After Phil reminds Thomas of their search for the Scarabeus, the baker recalls a clue to the object's whereabouts, a puzzling rhyme he heard in a dream: ÒShielded well so it comes not loose, Cheek of pig and feather of goose.Ó Phil urges Thomas to look for the Scarabeus, but the cook is more concerned over the fate of his wife and son, who have mysteriously disappeared. Meanwhile, Belor Ð now disguised as an influential Countess Ð gleefully turns her captive, Thomas' wife, Kate, into a living shadow. Searching the tunnels, Thomas rescues his son, Matthew, from Bram's clutches, transforming the lackey into a rat. As Bram scurries away to find his mistress, Matthew tells of his mother's capture, and then leads his father and Phil towards the Countess' hideout. Elsewhere, the Mayor's soldiers arrest the Countess for being a witch; however, when she is brought before Bloodworth, the Mayor gives the order for her release. It seems that the Mayor is in collusion with the Countess: she deliberately started the fire at his behest so that his brother and his workmen could build a new and better London. As the capitol continues to burn, Bloodworth happily looks over Christopher Wren's designs for the improved St. Paul's. D'Avray, is searching the tunnels for the Phantom, a mysterious, masked figure who has stolen a dress and sheet music from the Opera House. D'Avray is accompanied by his costume maker - none other than Belor in disguise - and her lackey, Bram; the manager is frightened of the ghost, believed to be the spirit of Augustin, a singer of great repute who was killed in a fire in the theatre; rumour has it that the Phantom is also responsible for the disappearance of a young singer named Christine... After encountering a street urchin named Daniel, Phil then finds Lazlo; in this era the magician is Pierre Latouche, a particularly unhygienic rat catcher. The green mould infecting Lazlo's arm has now spread to his chest, and unless he and Phil find the Scarabeus soon, they will both be consumed by the deadly infection; however, Daniel picks Pierre's pockets, and runs off with the magical bracelet. Elsewhere, the Phantom arrives at his secret lair and gives the dress and music to Christine; the Phantom is keeping the beautiful singer captive so that he can help hone her performance to perfection. While Phil finds Daniel and retrieves the bracelet, Belor discovers the Phantom's lair; once Christine is alone Belor transforms her into a penny whistle, casting it into the tunnels before taking on the singer's form. When Phil and Daniel find the whistle, they hear its cry for help; realising Belor's work, Phil takes it to Pierre in the hope he can restore the girl. Spotting the Phantom, D'Avray follows him to his lair, but Belor promptly puts him in a trance, and sends him back to the theatre with the stolen goods.
