"The Instability"

S  -  Ep  -  1989/01/01
Short Story  -  min
A professor tells his colleague he has made time travel possible. He also tells him that according to his calculations, there will be another star in the Sun's place in 27 million years. Written by Isaac Asimov.
Professor Firebrenner explains to Atkins how they can go forward in time to study a red dwarf and then return back to Earth The professor makes a trip with his colleague through time to observe the dark star. After making some notes, they decide to return home. When they time travel back, the colleague notices that there is black space outside. The professor explains that time and space move, so their universe has moved in an upper-dimensional level. This means they are in primeval chaos. His colleague points out that since they are here this is not primeval chaos anymore. The professor states that his partner is right and that they have introduced an instability, but he never finishes the sentence. They are all wiped out by a Big Bang as a new universe is created.

The first number that can be considered "dull" rather than "interesting" becomes interesting because of that fact.
The interesting number paradox is a semi-humorous paradox which arises from the attempt to classify natural numbers as "interesting" or "dull". The paradox states that all natural numbers are interesting. The "proof" is by contradiction: if there exists a non-empty set of uninteresting numbers, there would be a smallest uninteresting number -- but the smallest uninteresting number is itself interesting because it is the smallest uninteresting number, producing a contradiction.

Rothgo urges the children to join hands and concentrate, and, to their astonishment, the stone levitates, allowing the wizard to get free. Rothgo implores the children for help: Belor has stolen from him a mystical object known as the Nidas, and hidden it somewhere in the past; without the Nidas, Rothgo is incomplete, and he will soon die Ð however, if the children will agree to help retrieve the object, his powers will be restored. Helen and Phil immediately agree, and, together with a hesitant Terry, they step into a magical stone labyrinth that transports them back through time and spaceÉ
