When the Yanks come to the Royal Oak Gary is able to get Ron the parts he needs to build his own jeep and Reg discovers he has a black cousin, in the area to trace his ancestors. A racist corporal called Billy Joe tries to ban the black soldiers from the pub so Gary gets him drunk and knocks him out. Yvonne is so thrilled by the success of the memorabilia shop that Gary is worried by her zeal and takes steps to dampen her enthusiasm.

Gary's parallel lives run parallel as Yvonne puts their house in Cricklewood on the market to move to 'yuppy heaven' with a gym and a pool and Phoebe rents a house in the suburbs from a woman who is moving to Devon for the war's duration. Both women are pregnant by him but, as he tells Ron, Phoebe needs him more, meaning he must spend less time in the present.

About to be a father twice over, Gary is feeling under pressure and starts smoking 1940s cigarettes in Yvonne's presence. Back in 1942 he places an advert in the Times saying he would like to buy Swiss watches. He tells Reg these are to drop behind enemy lines telling different times to confuse Hitler but they are to sell in his shop. A little man turns up with a case-load, followed by undercover cop Tommy Kingdom, whose cover Reg blows. The man escapes, having apparently picked Gary's pocket of the one watch he managed to buy but fortunately Phoebe got there first and hid it in the Wonderbra Gary bought her

Gary is baby-sitting Yvonne's young nephew Arthur when he disappears. He suspects that the little boy may have wandered through the time warp back to 1942 and goes after him. Reg finds a small boy and Gary attempts to return him to the present but the child is unable to get through the portal. Of course he is not Arthur, who is found in the present and Yvonne goes off again, leaving Gary to mind him

Whilst Yvonne is in Korea on business Gary arranges to stay on a farm in Kent with Phoebe for a week. Yvonne phones him to make sure all is well but the subterfuge is that Gary has a sore throat and cannot speak so Ron does all the talking. This almost goes awry when Gary's father George turns up but he is a keen philatelist and is bought off with some rare stamps from the 1940s and accepts Gary's story that he is going to the Hebrides. Gary and Phoebe do go to Kent but it never stops raining.

Phoebe and Gary go to Liverpool to see her grandma, Ron having told him to look out for his grandfather Albert who became a hero for saving a child in a fire. Gary does indeed meet Albert, who gets arrested. After returning to the present for advice from Ron and finding himself in a parallel universe where Ron is a vicar and Yvonne, who fails to recognize him, has a husband also named Ron, Gary goes back to 1942 and gets Albert released but Albert has no desire to be a hero so Gary rescues the kid and lets him take the credit.

As Gary argues with Phoebe over which school to send their unborn child, Margie, the mother of Reg's son Frankie, comes to the pub, complaining about the rough treatment she is receiving from her husband Jackie. After Margie and Frankie have met, Jackie arrives, looking for trouble and threatening Gary, whom he mistakes for Reg. Reg, however, knocks him out. Back in the present day Yvonne miscarries and is rushed to hospital.

Eventually he gets away and goes back to the Royal Oak but the wedding looks like being a shambles as there is no best man.

On the eve of his wedding Gary attends two stag nights - one arranged by Ron and another set up by visiting Canadian pilots at the Royal Oak. Gary gets very drunk and almost ends up heading out to sea with the flyers but returns to the present in a hung-over state. To afford him a lie-in Yvonne turns off the alarm clock, causing him to over-sleep when he should be at the church getting married to Phoebe.

Having overslept Gary is late arriving at church; the wedding party has left and a funeral is in progress. Reg is painting the nursery for Gary, who needs some wartime fivers to pay him with. Ron agrees to print some for him if Gary can get him a date with Kate, a friend of Yvonne's, which Gary does. Unfortunately Ron starts to tell Kate that Gary travels through time so Gary has to compensate by telling her that Ron is such a scream he will say anything for a laugh.

Against Gary's advice, Yvonne has decided to go into business with a man called Clive, to promote her new health drink, but he is a swindler who runs off with her investment and so she and Ron, whose business has also gone bust, get drunk together. Gary learns that, at about the time Phoebe is due to give birth, the church bells rang out to celebrate General Montgomery's North African victories and resolves to be present at the birth. It's as well that he is because the midwife has got drunk and disappeared leaving Gary and Margie to deliver the baby - just as the bells start to ring. The child is a boy - Michael Montgomery Sparrow.

Hit by the blast from an air-raid whilst out with his son Michael, Gary is amazed to discover that both of them have been blown, by the blast, back into the present day and he has to concoct a story about finding an abandoned baby to appease a suspicious Yvonne, who believes him to be seeing another woman. He returns with Michael to the war and arranges for himself and Phoebe to look at a flat in the stylish West End, one of their neighbours being the composer and playwright Noel Coward, a fact which comes in handy when they are refused entry to the local air-raid shelter for being new to the area.

Yvonne's business selling holistic beauty products is a huge success and she is invited to a Woman of the Year bash at 10, Downing Street. However, when Gary arrives he is not allowed in because everyone assumes her real husband is her business partner Clive Lezouche. He returns to Phoebe, saying he has been denied access to a party given by Winston Churchill. Phoebe has been denied service by the local butcher for not being posh enough so Noel Coward helps her out with elocution lessons before Gary, posing as a health inspector following up supposed inquiries into bad meat, steals the butcher's stock of venison.

An unexploded bomb goes off in Duckett's Passage - opening a portal into the present and to Gary's horror Phoebe comes through it with him. He tells her his shop is his secret H.Q. and when Yvonne phones to remind him of their dinner date, plays a tape of an air-raid to get Phoebe to hide. Yvonne turns up at the shop and the two women meet but Gary just about gets by. However he has enlisted Ron's help in looking after Phoebe and, when he gets Phoebe back to her own time zone, finds that Ron is able to come through as well.

Overjoyed to think that he can also time travel, Ron is in his element in 1942 and partners Phoebe's easy friend Violet to accompany the Sparrows and Reg to a dance where he gets out of hand, forcing Gary to make excuses about his being an eccentric millionaire and his former commanding officer, now sick in the head. When the two men return to the future, Yvonne is surprised that Gary missed out on the chance to see a Chelsea game but he tells her he went to a stag party.

Ron suggests that Gary read up in old newspapers the winners of horse races in 1942 and then go back and bet on them, which he does but the bookie cheats him out of his winnings. Gary is anxious for Ron to print him some more wartime bank-notes and dates Mrs. Flanagan, Ron's boss, to get her out of the way whilst Ron does his forging. However, Ron is arrested for counterfeiting money, and tells the police the truth about printing notes for a friend who time-travels. As a result he has to see a psychiatrist so he gets back at Gary by telling Yvonne her husband has won six hundred pounds - unfortunately they are all in war-time fivers.

Yvonne's business is a great success and Gary tells Ron that, by comparison, he feels a nobody. All this will change, however, in 1942 when ebullient spy-master Tufty McDuff hauls him out of the Cafe Royal and informs him that Reg has told people he is a secret agent. Gary tries to tell the truth about himself but Tufty does not believe him, particularly that he comes from a time where beer costs two quid a pint. He introduces Gary to French colonel Henri Dupont, his exact double, and tells him he is to act as Henri's decoy for a briefing session about the allied landings to be held on the Isle of Wight. He is dropped off from a small boat at a quay - overrun with Germans. He is in France.

Gary sees that Tufty has used him as a decoy and that he is expendable. He is captured by some Germans but, thanks to French double agent called Celeste, he escapes and gets back to his boat and back home. He brags about his experience but nobody is especially interested. Ron goes to meet Simone, a statuesque model, on Yvonne's behalf and ends up having a passionate session with her in the back of a Rolls Royce. He too brags about his experience and again nobody is especially interested.
