After more complaints from Yvonne about his wartime obsession, Gary, armed with forged period bank notes, makes what he reckons will be his final trip back to the past, making a stock exchange killing and taking Phoebe to dinner at the Savoy. The King is visiting the area and the visit is being filmed. Consequently Yvonne is surprised to see a familiar face when the archive film is shown on television.

Six months have elapsed and Gary has not been back to Duckett's passage but is persuaded by Ron to return and invest money so that, fifty years later, the interest will be huge. Telling Phoebe he has been in America working on a musical, he learns that her father was killed in an air-raid and her husband taken prisoner of war. She is now the pub's landlady. He deposits the money in a bank straight out of 'Dad's Army' but when, in the present, he and Ron return, they find that the money was invested in a firm which went bust in 1957.

In the doghouse with Yvonne over his fertility problem, Gary takes coffee and other treats back to the Royal Oak, only to find Phoebe's head turned by a handsome Czech officer called Ludo. Since he wants to invest her late father's money in a dodgy pension scheme and is thinking of changing his name to Robert Maxwell, Gary sends him packing - to Phoebe's displeasure. Policeman Reg helps him drown his sorrows but that means when he steps back into the present he is over the limit and gets done for drunk driving.

Gary loses his driving license and his job and, back in 1941, Phoebe is just as miserable despite his present to her of a pair of tights. On return to the present he finds Yvonne has called in a marriage counsellor but she argues with her and the session ends abruptly. Gary has good sex with Yvonne but, given his unemployment, she no longer feels they should have a baby. Gary goes back to the Royal Oak, taking comfort in Hitler's invasion of Russia.

As cover for his time travel Gary tells Yvonne he works late for Ron and feels obliged to take her to dinner at an Indian restaurant. However Phoebe has arranged to cook him a special meal on the same night, which involves much climbing in and out of the restaurant toilet window to travel back and forward in time. An air-raid bails him out where Phoebe is concerned but Ron's marriage pays the price for Gary's present day excuses.

Yvonne gets her dream job in Macclesfield and Gary, reluctant to leave London and Phoebe, fakes his suicide. However Yvonne comes back after appreciating that the job was not for her and misinterprets Ron's sympathy for the 'widow' as making a pass at her. In 1941 Gary starts to experience the harsh reality of war as a bomb falls in the area.

Gary finds that wartime life has its tribulations as the pub's water supply is cut off after bomb damage, he has to risk his life fire-watching and he and Phoebe have become the subject of local gossip. There is a way out, though, as Ron explains, as his suicide note has not been found and he can therefore return to his life in the present day.

Under the guise of being paid for working for Ron, Gary gives Yvonne money earned by taking items from 1941 and selling them to a collectors' shop. Yvonne has become the leading lady in the Willesden Players but Gary objects to her doing a love scene with the leading man and invalids him out so that he can take his place. He scores a big hit in 1941, too, when he enters a talent contest and gains an agent, Mr. Wix, who wants to send him on tour.

Gary's concert in Palmer's Green is a success and Mr. Wix books him into the Plaistow Astoria, on the same night that he and Yvonne are opening with the Willesden Wildeans. He is nervous and the doctor gives him pills to relax him. Due to an air-raid he ducks out of the Astoria gig early and makes it back to the theatre with Yvonne but has had so many pills he collapses on stage.

Whilst Yvonne, who believes she is pregnant, visits her mother, Gary accompanies Phoebe to Buckinghamshire to visit her cousins, evacuees unaware that their parents are dead. Gary, whom Phoebe has passed off as her husband and whose cover as a Hollywood song-writer is almost blown by an American airman, gets through to the withdrawn little girl Sally and takes a photo of her. Phoebe and Gary make love in a barn before he returns to Yvonne. Not pregnant after all she breaks down when she sees Sally's photo and Gary comforts her.

Phoebe's license for the pub is due to be renewed and sleazy brewery rep Harrison says he will sanction it if she sleeps with him but Gary catches him out by using a pocket tape recorder and ensures she keep the licence anyway. A Portakabin is erected in Duckett's Passage for building work. It almost blocks Gary's trip to the past but, unlike Ron, he manages to find a way through in time for Phoebe's birthday.

Gary opens a shop selling war-time memorabilia brought back from the past in Duckett's plaza, a shopping parade on the site of the passage. Jayne Mansfield, the estate agent who helped him get the shop, tries to seduce him and when he resists, tells Yvonne he made a pass at her. However he convinces Yvonne this is not true and Yvonne pours coffee in her computer. Whilst actually going on a skiing holiday with Yvonne, Gary tells the Royal Oak regulars that he has to go to Singapore, at which point it is announced that America has entered the war.

Gary returns with Yvonne from the skiing trip and gives Ron a watch, actually set for 1941. Ron is having trouble with Stella, who won't even ask him to her New Year party, though after Yvonne has spoken to her she relents. Ron is late and blames the watch. Gary manages to celebrate the New Year in both 1941 and 1995. He takes Phoebe back to his room and encounters the wrath of Mrs. Bloss, the landlady, but something he discovers about Mrs. Bloss's husband in the present gives him a hold over her.

Gary's shop flourishes whilst Yvonne is depressed at being jobless so Gary applies on her behalf to the Symbion Company, based in Korea. In the present day Gary again runs into the policeman who is the spitting image of Reg but Reg tells Gary he and his wife Minnie have no children. A little detective work leads Gary to the Streatham Bus garage and the revelation that Reg does have a son, Frank, by a bus conductor's wife called Margie. Mr. Shik and his silent wife come to the Sparrows for an informal interview over dinner. Gary and Yvonne row about the war but Mr. Shik is impressed by their openness and gives Yvonne the job.

Detectably counterfeit money notes are flooding the area around the Royal Oak and initially Gary suspects Ron trying to discredit him out of jealousy but the notes are traced to Owen Jones, a Nazi spy whom Reg accuses of sleeping with his wife. Owen is caught and it turns out he has no member - it was shot off - so he was not having sex with Minnie after all. Gary tells Yvonne this story to help her with her course work, changing names and making it sound like a fiction. However Ron is surprised to hear Yvonne talking about the inhabitants of Gary's 1941 world, and things are getting even worse with Stella.

As Ron's marriage crumbles, Gary brags of his prowess with the ladies, only to find that both Yvonne and Phoebe, tired of his absences, are carving out their own social lives. He wins Phoebe back from a lying aircraft mechanic who claims to be a fighter pilot and, after congratulating Reg on the model fort he has made for his son Frankie, amuses Yvonne by coming as Maid Marian to her fancy dress party, wrongly mistaking her Peter Pan costume for Robin Hood. For a drunken Ron it's the end of the line with Stella as he insults an animal rights campaigner and collapses in the garden.

Gary successfully performs the Beatles' song 'When I'm 64', which he claims to have penned himself, at a birthday party in the Royal Oak and Mr. Wyx suggests he sell the song to entertainer George Formby to sing at the Hackney Empire. George arrives with his controlling wife Beryl and Gary is unhappy to give him the song. However, he is saved by the fact that George gets drunk, forgets the words and never performs it.

Phoebe's husband Donald, who has escaped from the prison camp in Italy, returns. Gary feels he must give Phoebe up for good - Ron suggests he tell her he is an alien from the planet Zircon - but both Phoebe and Donald tell Gary separately that they allowed themselves to be pushed into a somewhat passionless marriage by relatives. It is implicit in what Donald tells Gary that his real love was Steve, with whom he planned to emigrate but was killed in North Africa. Donald takes his leave, bidding Gary to take care of Phoebe. Yvonne is devastated because Gary again fails to come home and she has arranged a job interview for him with her firm.

Phoebe recovers and, seeing the name Sheba on the label, suspects Gary is seeing another woman. He decides to tell her the truth about Yvonne but she has already fallen asleep.
