When a long-lost spaceman returns to Earth from a distant planet where our "souls" may live, his fuddled observations spark a religious schism and war. Asher Sutton has been lost in deepest space for twenty years. Suddenly arrives a warning from the future, that he will return- and that he must be killed. He is destined to write a book whose message may lead to the death of millions in centuries to come. For this reason Sutton is hounded by the sinister warring factions of the future who wish to influence or prevent the writing of this book he has not yet begun to write. In November 1970, Simon Morley, an advertising sketch artist, is approached by U.S. Army Major Ruben Prien to participate in a secret government project. He is taken to a huge warehouse on the West Side of Manhattan, where he views what seem to be movie sets, with people acting on them. It seems this is a project to learn whether it is feasible to send people back into the past by what amounts to self-hypnosis„whether, by convincing oneself that one is in the past, not the present, one can make it so.

Jeremiah Ward, a hot shot New York money manager, turns off the highway, straight into his past. In rural New Hampshire, he discovers confusing clues and ghostly reminders of not only people he knew forty years ago, but of the person he once was: an idealist, a visionary, whose clarity grew dimmer with each acquisition and every brilliant move on the career chess board. Exit 22-A seems to represent a portal connecting him with the values and virtue left behind, but it turns out to be much more. Melody, the daughter he never knew, has created the entire artifice, the road map and the cast of characters, determined to test Jeremiah's true convictions and to change his life. And, in doing so, saves it.

t's strange enough when Susan Shaw disappears without a trace on a wintry March afternoon. It's stranger still when her uninformative note is found in the hallway of her apartment building, along with a black cat that no one has seen before. And it's strangest of all when she suddenly appears again, wearing clothes that are eighty years out of date, and tells a wild story about an old woman with a fly-away hat, an elevator that travels into the past, and a distressed family that only she can save. Who is going to believe such a tale? Certainly not her father. But Susan is determined to prove to him that it's all true. And she has other plans for him as well... Who, in fact, could believe such a tale? Even the author, who takes part in the story, has his doubts. But just as those doubts are all laid to rest, the mystery thickens once more. This time it's a double disappearance...
