Puzzled, the Enterprise follows the enigmatic trail of distress messages left behind by the vessel of reputed time-space-continuum researcher Dr. Paul Manheim, which went missing years ago during his last experiment. It went terribly wrong, causing a time-distorting ripple to spread from a binary star system and pulsar's tapped-into unimaginable energy, which already affects the Enterpise crew. Meanwhile, Starfleet sends the Enterprise to the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone, where their starbases and personnel have disappeared after decades without contact between the Federation and the Romulans. Meanwhile, Dr. Crusher revives the three survivors who died of incurable diseases and were placed in cryonic freeze after their deaths in the hopes that cures might be found in the future. Upon their first encounter, Captain Picard also learns from the Romulans that their starbases and personnel have also disappeared.

Deep in space, the Enterprise comes across a Federation shuttle craft that is floating in space and without much power but which does exhibit the life signs of one human aboard. They bring the craft aboard only to find that it is one of their own shuttle craft and to their amazement find a duplicate, but unconscious, Captain Picard aboard. Data and Geordi Laforge manage to restore power and determine that the craft actually comes from 6 hours into the future and the shuttle's log reveals that the Enterprise will be destroyed. As the Enterprise enters a dangerous vortex and the events in the recovered shuttle's log seem to be coming true, Picard and the crew must find a way to break the time-warp cycle they seem to be in. The Enterprise gets caught in a time loop which always has one result: total destruction of the ship, itself. ///// Unbeknownst to the crew, the Enterprise is caught in a time loop where they are continually reliving the same day. The Enterprise approaches a temporal distortion from which another Federation vessel is emerging. The evasive action action they take - using the tractor beam to push the oncoming vessel away from them - is unsuccessful and the Enterprise is destroyed, at which point the time loop brings them back to the beginning and they relive the sequence all over again. Several members of the crew however begin to have a serious case of deja vu and become convinced that they are reliving the same day, over and over. Data has an idea that might get them out of it. Captain Picard incurs serious wounds in a fight, even his artificial heart is gravely damaged. While Dr. Crusher wrestles with the medical consequences, his mind meets Q, who presents him to a parade of people who fell victim to Picard's actions and neglects, from his father and fellow cadets to himself, and offers him the possibility to have a 'second chance' without causing disaster by upsetting time. After Picard's initial refusal claim to have no regrets, Q forces him to acknowledge he made stupid mistakes and fix at least the adolescent one that got him stabbed and slapped in the face as an Academy graduate, or die and by stuck with Q for eternity. His error had been to help fellow Ensign Corey return the cheating at a pool game to a Naussicaan, a strong, badly tempered race, while ruining a friendship by having an affair. This time he stops Corey fighting and dying, but is deemed a coward, losing both's friendship, and returned to the Enterprise an an inconspicuous Junior Grade in an alternative present, no longer a daring action officer in command but a safe, boring analyst, without serious career prospects. Picard, LaForge, Data and Troi return from a sadly boring scientific conference to the Enterprise. They experience weird instances where either one or several of them are perceived to seem frozen in time by the other(s), although both biometrics and technical shuttle diagnostics check out perfectly normal. It soon turns out there is a whole spray of tiny local occurrences of time-space-continuum distortions, most worrying in a pattern pointing at the Enterprise, which they find frozen as well as a Romulan war-bird, which seems to be frozen during an invasion, but once they find a way to get aboard without being sucked-in that appears fake. The source of the distortions is an organism, from another continuum. Wikipedia: Pockets of temporal distortions allow the crew to prevent a disaster.
