The Queen of the World, or Under the Tyranny

The Queen of the World, or Under the Tyranny

S  -  Ep  -  1900//
Novel  -  min
The protagonist, Gerald Pierce de Lacy, is sent three hundred years into the future by occult means.
The world of 2174 is an authoritarian dystopia ruled by the Chinese who possess weapons of mass destruction (including something that might be a disintegrating ray) and a huge fleet of flap-winged airships of great speed and power. The Chinese empire is attacked by rebel forces based in Antarctica, the hidden headquarters of their leader, England's King Arthur. The insurgents are soundly defeated and the king is killed in a battle fought with fantastic weapons. "Yet this nominal victory for the Chinese marks the beginning of the downfall of their empire, for the rest of the world rises in rebellion. The English fleet destroys the Chinese capital, and eventually the empire falls ... [Lenore, King Alfred's daughter becomes] Queen of England, or, as the book title has it, Queen of the World. De Lacy would be Lenore's consort, but he is snatched back to the nineteenth century ... A curious work. Similar to the work of George Griffith, but superior in many ways. It is hack work done by a good writer who has dashed off a thriller hastily without worrying about loose ends, inconsistencies, or clarity."

After a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong during a demonstration, a scientist (Tom Bell) finds himself trapped in an alternate reality that bears some similarities to our own, but also has some striking differences.
After a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong during a demonstration, a scientist finds himself trapped in an alternate reality that bears some similarities to our own, but also has some striking differences. In this other reality the Second World War had never occurred, mankind had not yet traveled into Space and Mt. Everest had not yet been conquered, just to name a few things. Also in this other reality he is no longer a scientist but rather a well known author. He also finds that he is married to a beautiful woman who he instantly falls in love with but who his alternate self never cared for. He has some difficulty convincing anyone that he is not actually who they think he is. With the help of a physics professor who believes his story, he finally manages to convince his 'wife' that he is not the man she knew before. After a personal tragedy in this alternate world, he finds himself back in his own world and desperately trying to locate the woman he fell in love with in the other world. Little does she know, however, that her life depends on him finding her.

Ms. Lje reveals that she has received a communication from an outfit calling itself "Interstellar Information Ltd." about an incident in a star system so far away that even by a faster-than-light ship, no message could return from it in less than two months. Written by James Blish.
Capt. Robin Weinbaum of Earth Security submits to a request for an interview from Dana Lje, a video commentator, mostly because she can and has made his life difficult with her reporting of Security lapses, especially in a recent case involving the Government of Erskine, another planetary system. Ms. Lje reveals that she has received a communication from an outfit calling itself "Interstellar Information Ltd." about an incident in a star system so far away that even by a faster-than-light ship, no message could return from it in less than two months. The incident in fact is due to take place in the next few days. The communication also alleges that there is a new device aboard the ship, and gives the name of the device.

"'Yields a falsehood when appended to its own quotation' yields a falsehood when appended to its own quotation." Authored by Willard Van Orman Quine.
Quine's paradox is a paradox concerning truth values, attributed to Willard Van Orman Quine. It is related to the liar paradox as a problem, and it purports to show that a sentence can be paradoxical even if it is not self-referring and does not use demonstratives or indexicals (i.e. it does not explicitly refer to itself). The paradox can be expressed as follows: "Yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation" yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation. If the paradox is not clear, consider each part of the above description of the paradox incrementally: it = yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation its quotation = "yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation" it preceded by its quotation = "yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation" yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation. With these tools, we may now reconsider the description of the paradox. It can be seen to assert the following: The statement "'yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation' yields falsehood when preceded by its quotation" is false. In other words, the sentence implies that it is false, which is paradoxical -- for if it is false, what it states is in fact true.

New Light on the Past. Conrad Stargard, a 20th-century Pole marooned in 13th-century Poland, had just ten years to prevent the Mongol Hordes from slaughtering everyone in Poland. So he "invented" all the modern advances, things like prefabricated housing, playboy clubs, the steam engine, universal education, the cloth factory, and belly dancing. But wars are fought by warriors, not strong economies, and Conrad would need the very best. So he set out to create an army...

A team of scientists working to raise a sunken Russian nuclear submarine on an ocean platform off the coast of Miami, Florida, unearth an ancient Atlantean relic from the sea floor and bring in an expert to make some sense of it. But while attempting to raise the sub, radioactive leakage from its missles triggers the re-emergence of Atlantis, and the resulting tidal wave destroys the platform and leaves only a small group of survivors. Rescued by two Vietnam vets-turned-heavies who are out relaxing after their latest job, their boat eventually runs aground on a Carribean island nearby where, upon going ashore, it is discovered that everything has been destroyed and everybody killed. The culprits, a vicious group of well-armed raiders, and their leader, Crystal Skull, are descendants of Atlantis' original race who set about reclaiming the world and adding the survivors to the list of victims as they struggle to stay alive and defeat the raiders and send Atlantis back to the ocean floor.
