A modern English family embark on a real-life time-travel adventure to late Victorian London. A 1999 English family volunteers to spend three months in a restored Victorian house, which recreates life for the middle class of 1900. The family must wear period clothes, and not use any conveniences or products that was not available to a family of their class in 1900. The camera follows the members about as they struggle with trying to get enough hot water for a bath, create their own shampoo, raise chickens in the backyard, and (the women, at least) deal with constricting garments.

We go behind-the scenes to find out how an ordinary terraced house in the shadow of the Millennium Dome was transformed into a time machine and why the Bowlers were selected ÒAll traces of the 20th centuryÓ are removed from an old house in Greenwich, England, and a family is selected to live in it in Part 1 of this four-part documentary. But the people who are retrofitting this Òtime machineÓ (as social historian Daru Rooke calls it) have some difficulty finding a 19th-century stove to go into the house. As for the family, the soon-to-be-mistress of the 1900 House, 44-year-old Joyce Bowler, is apprehensive. ÒWhether we've been held together by 20th-century technology is something we've yet to find out.Ó

The Bowlers wake up to their first morning in the 1900 house. There is no water, potties need emptying and the milk has gone off. The dream is over. Part 2 of four. Move-in day at 50 Elliscombe Road proves to be a ÒRude AwakeningÓ for the Bowlers. They must learn to live with chamber pots and straight-edge razors, not to mention the layers upon layers of clothing the women must wear and the balky stove, which doesn't cook foods properly or provide steam heat for the bathtub. Then there's laundry, an all-day (and more) job---for Joyce and the girls. In the meantime, husband Paul heads off to work. ÒHe gets the better deal,Ó Joyce sighs. ÒBut I get the frillier drawers.Ó US Version Episode 3 A Woman's Place The drudgery of Victorian-era housework is bad enough, but it's greasy hair that pushes mom Joyce over the edge (to a drugstore, actually, to buy shampoo) in Part 3 of this four-part docu-soap. Speaking of soap, the Bowlers have to make their own. And despite their best efforts at housecleaning, the house never seems to get real clean. So they hire a maid, which poses an entirely new set of problems. Meanwhile, son Joe has another complaint: ÒI don't like the food.Ó

It is a week since the Bowlers began their time travel experience. But no one has had a decent bath. The range cooker, which should provide hot water, hasn't produced a drop. US Version: Episode 4 The End Of An Era Conclusion. The Bowlers head home and not a moment too soon. Their routine, Joyce moans, has become Òmind-numbingly boring.Ó Moreover, their workload increases after Joyce ÒliberatesÓ (read: fires) the family's Òmaid of all work,Ó because she can't stand having a servant. But Joyce and eldest daughter Kathryn find time to prepare a two-woman show for London's Players Old Time Music Hall. Then (after a stop at Burger King) it's home to the Bowlers' house.
