Knight Godefroy has to return to our time from 1023 to get back the sacred jewels that Jacquouille has taken to the 20th century. The sequel to The Visitors reunites us with those lovable ruffians from the French Medieval ages who - through magic - are transported into the present, with often drastic consequences. Godefroy de Montmirail travels to today to recover the missing family jewels and a sacred relic, guarantor of his wife-to-be's fertility. The confrontation between Godefroy's repellent servant Jack the Crack and his descendent, the effete Jacquart, present-day owner of the chateau, further complicates the matter.

American archaeologist Martin Padway is visiting the Pantheon in Rome in 1938. A thunderstorm arrives, lightning cracks, and he finds himself transported to 6th century Rome. Written by L. Sprague de Camp.
Lest Darkness Fall is similar to Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. American archaeologist Martin Padway is visiting the Pantheon in Rome in 1938. A thunderstorm arrives, lightning cracks, and he finds himself transported to 6th century Rome (535). When Padway arrives, Italy is ruled by the Ostrogoths, a tribe which had recently overthrown the Western Roman Empire, but which (in de Camp's opinion, anyway) rules with benevolence, allowing freedom of religion and maintaining the urban Roman society they had conquered. In the real timeline the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire temporarily expanded westwards, embarking on what came to be known as the Gothic War (535_554). They overthrew the Ostrogoths and the Vandals in north Africa, but they never consolidated their rule over Italy, and it collapsed into smaller states with further invasions by the Lombards. The war devastated the Italian urbanized society that was supported by a settled hinterland, and by the end of the conflict Italy was considerably depopulated: its population is estimated to have decreased from 7 million to 2.5 million people. The great cities of Rome were abandoned as Italy fell into a long period of decline. Some historians consider this the true beginning of the Dark Ages.

Time-travelling tourists go on a "Crucifixion Tour." The tour operator warns the tourists that they must not do anything to disrupt history: specifically, when the crowd is asked whether to spare Jesus or Barabbas, the tourists must all join the call "Give us Barabbas!" (a priest absolves them from any guilt for so doing). However, when the moment comes, the protagonist suddenly realizes that the crowd condemning Jesus to the cross is composed entirely of tourists from the future, and that no actual Jewish Jerusalemites of 33 AD are present at all.

Felix and a baby mammoth named ÒWoollyÓ land in the Middle Ages near a fort where a squire is wielding a wooden sword. A nearby mule, amused by the looks of the baby mammoth, joins our friends along with the squire. The four then make their way to the King's castle. On the way, they will discover that the squire is in fact a girl named Matilda. On top of that, Matilida is also the King's granddaughter! But she would much rather be a heroic knight than a princess. Unfortunately, the knight Karl is determined to marry Matilda by way of a duel. Thus, a strong warrior will be needed to defeat Karl and prevent the marriage. Felix is chosen as Karl's rival, though he really isn't up to the taskÉ The big day soon arrives, and the audience senses an oncoming catastrophe. Matilda then shows up in her father's armour along with her mule. She forces Karl to the ground, but injures her leg in the process. Karl shows no mercy, and is about to defeat his opponent, when Woolly then appears, flinging him out of sight. Matilda's marriage is in the end aborted, and Felix and Woolly will be knighted for their bravery.

Felix is wandering alone over the cliffs during the Stone Age, when he suddenly falls into a deep trap hole from which he cannot free himself. Luckily, a young baby mammoth, Woolly, turns up to save Felix. But the rabbit will then be taken hostage by a group of hunters. The hunter's wife is not pleased about the small catch, since a rabbit would hardly provide enough fur for a new coat. In order to buy some time, Felix lights a match to demonstrate fire. The diversion works briefly, but quickly goes sour due to the cavemen's lack of familiarity with such flames, causing them to burn themselves. Woolly, who has been watching the entire incident from a distance, soon rejoins Felix. Shortly thereafter, a sabre-toothed-tiger emerges! Felix quickly lights a new fire to drive the tiger awayÉ In spite of the initial difficulties, Felix's efforts will ultimately make life in the caves more comfortable, for fire will allow the cavemen to fend off the sabre-toothed-tiger. After saying good-bye, Felix is again on his way back home.

A host of Greek gods are hidden among the audience; Zeus favours Alexander, but Hades is crazy about Adonis. In the first of three tries, Adonis lands the discuss in the dirt, so it won't be difficult for Alexander to win the first round. Then follows the deciding throw Ð which Adonis completely muddles. Alexander is now certain he can do better, but gets distracted by Aphrodite, and lands the disk right in front of him. Adonis' discus then flies a great distance. With Felix cheering him on, Alexander then makes an incredible throw... yet the discus will then mysteriously disappear! The referee declares Adonis as the winner, but Felix cannot accept this, and demands that Alexander throw another object of the same weight, so Felix quickly puts several stones of similar weight in his suitcase. Alexander sees a new chance and swirls Felix's suitcase further than Adonis' discus. Alexander is declared the first winner of the Olympic Games, and Felix is honoured with a crown.

Levinthal Paradox

Levinthal Paradox

S  -  Ep  -
 -  min
The length of time that it takes for a protein chain to find its folded state is many orders of magnitude shorter than it would be if it freely searched all possible configurations. Discovered by Cyrus Levinthal.
Levinthal's paradox is a thought experiment, also constituting a self-reference in the theory of protein folding. In 1969, Cyrus Levinthal noted that, because of the very large number of degrees of freedom in an unfolded polypeptide chain, the molecule has an astronomical number of possible conformations. An estimate of 3300 or 10143 was made in one of his papers.[1] (Often incorrectly cited as a 1968 paper.[2]) For example, a polypeptide of 100 residues will have 99 peptide bonds, and therefore 198 different phi and psi bond angles. If each of these bond angles can be in one of three stable conformations, the protein may misfold into a maximum of 3198 different conformations (including any possible folding redundancy). Therefore if a protein were to attain its correctly folded configuration by sequentially sampling all the possible conformations, it would require a time longer than the age of the universe to arrive at its correct native conformation. This is true even if conformations are sampled at rapid (nanosecond or picosecond) rates. The "paradox" is that most small proteins fold spontaneously on a millisecond or even microsecond time scale. This paradox is central to computational approaches to protein structure prediction.[3] Levinthal himself was aware that proteins fold spontaneously and on short timescales. He suggested that the paradox can be resolved if "protein folding is sped up and guided by the rapid formation of local interactions which then determine the further folding of the peptide; this suggests local amino acid sequences which form stable interactions and serve as nucleation points in the folding process."[4] Indeed, the protein folding intermediates and the partially folded transition states were experimentally detected, which explains the fast protein folding. This is also described as protein folding directed within funnel-like energy landscapes[5][6][7] Some computational approaches to protein structure prediction have sought to identify and simulate the mechanism of protein folding.[8] Levinthal also suggested that the native structure might have a higher energy, if the lowest energy was not kinetically accessible. An analogy is a rock tumbling down a hillside that lodges in a gully rather than reaching the base.[9]
