King Saul has serious bouts of depression and David, a shepherd boy, is invited to come and play his lute for the king. Unbeknownst to the king, David has been anointed by Samuel to be the next king of the Hebrews. The Casluhite army prepares for yet another attack, but a battle is avoided by having two champions fight on behalf of the two sides. Goliath, the Casluhite champion, is so overpowering that no Hebrew can be found to fight him. When David visits his brothers on the battlefield, he offers to fight Goliath. David kills the giant and is taken to the king's palace. The royal princes and princesses are all very impressed with David, but secretly, King Saul is jealous of the young champion. In a moment of madness, Saul might kill the boy who's just saved the country.

He feels threatened by David's popularity and secretly plans David's demise. By offering David his daughter's hand ñfor a small price,î he gets David to commit to a dangerous military operation. Meanwhile, King Saul has sent an informer to the enemy camp, but David escapes and manages to complete the mission. The king has to agree to David marrying his daughter Michal. However, King Saul is so determined to get rid of David, he is even prepared to do the killing himself.

King Saul wants David dead but has failed to get him killed on the battlefield. In his madness, Saul throws a spear at David while he plays the lute for the king. David runs for his life and finds refuge with Samuel the prophet. King Saul sends an army unit to the chapel where Samuel meets with a group of priests. The soldiers are unable to arrest David, and in the end King Saul himself rides out to meet with Samuel and to take David prisoner, or so he hopes. However, the king's military strength is ineffective against Samuel's spiritual power. Still on the run, David decides to seek refuge with a neighboring king, hoping he will not be recognized. When he does get recognized, he pretends to be mad and is thrown out as a result. Back in Canaan, David knows that the king's men are closing in on him.

King Saul is in hot pursuit of David, who is hiding in a cave. When the king walks into the cave, David has the opportunity to kill the man who is trying to kill him. Instead, David secretly cuts off a piece of the king's cloak. Shortly afterwards, David confronts the king from a high rock and begs King Saul to stop hunting him down. Saul is completely taken by surprise. He cancels the chase and invites David to join him on his way back to the palace, but David knows that he just cannot trust King Saul. He decides to seek refuge with King Boran, an enemy king, under the pretense that he has turned against King Saul. Boran invites David to join him in battle against Saul, and David reluctantly agrees. He may have to switch sides at the last minute. Meanwhile, Saul is desperate for help.

Sunday teatime series aimed at children and no doubt inspired by the success of the previous years 'Timeslip', 'Jamie' was yet another variation on the time travel theme with, in this case, the hero being transported from era to era on a magic carpet. On his journey's Jamie (Garry Miller), accompanied by his friend, Tink (Nigel Chivers) encountered famous figures from British history such as Guy Fawkes (in the story entitled "Remember, Remember") and Horatio Nelson ("England Expects"). The other constant in the series was the enigmatic Mr Zed (Aubrey Morris) who always encouraged Jamie on his travels and seemed to know a lot more about the magic carpet than he ever let on. The one thing that he did reveal was that neither Jamie nor Tink, try as they might, could ever change history. 13 episodes.
