Syndicated comic strip created (and introduced on 12/5/1932) by American cartoonist V. T. Hamlin, who wrote and drew the popular and influential strip through four decades for Newspaper Enterprise Association. Hamlin introduced an engaging cast of characters, and his story lines entertained with a combination of adventure, fantasy, and humor. Alley Oop, the strip's title character, was a sturdy citizen in the prehistoric kingdom of Moo. He rode his pet dinosaur Dinny, carried a stone war hammer, and wore nothing but a fur loincloth. He would rather fight dinosaurs in the jungle than deal with his fellow countrymen in Moo's capital and sole cave-town. Despite these exotic settings, the stories were often satires of American suburban life. On April 5, 1939, Hamlin introduced a new plot device which greatly expanded his choice of storylines: A time machine, invented by 20th-century scientist Dr. Elbert Wonmug, who bore a rather suspicious resemblance to the Grand Wizer. The name Wonmug was a bilingual pun on Albert Einstein; "ein" is German for "one", and a "stein" is a form of drinking mug. Oscar Boom is derived from the words Nobel Prize, Oscar = Prize and Boom after Alfred Nobel (the inventor of dynamite). Oop was transported to the 20th century by an early test of the machine (in the Sunday strip of April 9, 1939). He was hardly upset by the incident and apparently did not find modern society to be any different from his own. He then became Dr. Wonmug's man in the field, embarking on expeditions to various periods and places in history, such as Ancient Egypt, the England of Robin Hood, and the American frontier. Oop met such historical or mythical figures as Cleopatra, King Arthur, and Ulysses in his adventures. In addition to the time machine, other science fiction devices were introduced. Oop once drove an experimental electric-powered race car and, in the 1940s, he traveled to the Moon. During his adventures, he was often accompanied by his girlfriend Ooola, and by the sometimes-villainous, sometimes-heroic G. Oscar Boom (G.O. Boom), Dr. Wonmug's rival and occasional partner. Laboratory assistant Ava joined the cast in recent years.

While Dave attempts to write a song for his High School reunion, Alvin breaks Simon's time machine. Frustrated by the noise, Dave takes the boys to the park where a merry-go-round sends The Chipmunks back to 1962. They meet a younger, insecure Dave who believes he might make for a better accountant than a musician. The boys don't wish to end up as accountants as well so they follow Dave home and convince his father to give Dave another chance. As Alvin writes a new song and Simon determines the exact time they must leave at the merry-go-round, Dave rests. At his prom, the boys further build Dave's confidence and energy before they rush back to the merry-go-round, barely making it in time. Once in the present they learn Dave wishes to use the song Alvin wrote.

Miss Miller strains a muscle and has Jeanette and Eleanor fulfill her requests while Brittany stresses over what to wear for the Carnival Queen contest. Soon after Dave drives both the boys and girls to the museum at which Brittany makes a bet with Missy Snootson, another girl in her class, that if the mummy of King Rooten Tooten does not rise from the dead and go to her home by midnight, Brittany must drop out of the race to be the school Carnival Queen. If he does, Missy will drop out. Jeanette, Alvin, and Miss Miller all dress as mummies to try and fool Missy and her friends. Brittany loses her chance at becoming Carnival Queen when each deception fails, however, unknown to Brittany that the true King Rooten Tooten actually did visit her. The King was confused for Miss Miller due to his limp.

Dave is having many problems in life; including things like not being able to pay for car repairs and write a good song. After costing the boys their soccer game and not being able to pay to send them to summer camp, he feels that the boys would be better off without him. The boys later come to him in a dream saying how things would be different for them without him. Simon is first to say that without Dave to help him in the spelling bee, he would still be in kindergarten at the age of 40. (The word was Mississippi. Without Dave's help he spelled it Misaspi, causing him to be held back.) Theodore says that without Dave's help, he became a hermit on a desert island. Alvin is last to say that without the first success of his lemonade stand, he became a failure.

Alvin has to do a report on the true meaning of Christmas by Christmas Eve. Upset, Alvin carelessly speeds away on his bike, causing Simon and Theodore to spin out of control. Alvin runs over Mr. Carroll's flowers, causing Mr. Carroll to yell at him, Alvin responds by calling him a grouch. Alvin writes a HUGE list of what he wants for Christmas. Alvin delivers his paper route, which makes him late to deliver his list and forget to write his essay. Alvin falls asleep, which then starts his adventure. He first meets an old version of Dave who is the ghost of Christmas past. He takes Alvin to when they were tiny kids. He meets Theodore (spirit of Christmas present) and shows him why Mr. Carroll is mean. Alvin doesn't want to talk about Christmas, but then Simon (spirit of Christmas yet to come) shows him the "you" he may soon become. He is seen next eating all the food Theodore made for their grandparents, making him fat. Then he hurts them with his fatness by breaking the house. Alvin starts saying to Simon "I'll change!!!" Alvin wakes up and invites Mr. Carroll to their house, helps Simon bring his gift to Dave upstairs, and bakes with Theodore.
