Charlie's laziness ruins a party. Dream travel to 23rd century. Charlie is so lazy that he relies on futuristic gadgets, and because he is too lazy to clean up the apartment, he has inconvenienced everyone to the point where they have no choice but to have their New Years party at Carface's. He has a dream of being in the 23rd century where dogs are oppressed by the Great Deliverer. When not only is every other dog brainwashed by the Great Deliverer himself, and he turns out to resemble the mailman he'd barked at earlier (with a voice projector to make it sound like it was a lot of vicious dogs), Charlie regrets his laziness and calls a puppy to enlist everyone else under the promise of a T-bone, while Charlie does clean the apartment so they can have their New Years party. Also, he makes amends with the mailman by giving him a package (whose contents turn out to have roller skates in them).

People from three atemporal time tribes must unite to save the crystallization and fracturing of all of history. Into the fourth dimension, the ""ocean of time"" itself. A man named Dhiritirashta is the first to build a suit that allows him to swim in the seas of time, known as the Instant. From there he can swim in the three spatial dimensions, as well as in a fourth spatial dimension corresponding to Earthly time. When changes are made in the past, they flow forward, changing the future, and this flowing substance is the water of time. By manipulating these waters, Dhiritirashta attempts to dominate all of human history, but his changes inadvertently create thousands of histories from which humans can leap into the Instant, all battling to control time.

17 year old Z.T., a brilliant mind and solid athlete, dreams of a great college and a future of invention and innovation. But he still grieves over his mother's recent death, a shoulder injury will likely prevent him from an athletic scholarship, and his father has squandered his college trust fund in bad investments. His situation is desperate. Suddenly Z.T. is confronted by Zack, a raving, 67 year old alcoholic, who claims to be Z.T.'s older self, volunteering as a lab rat in the first experiments in time-travel. Zack has changed his identity to fool the scientists, in a desperate attempt to convince his younger self to avoid a terrible compromise in integrity, which will ultimately set him on a downward spiral toward ruin and tragedy. Z.T. is understandably skeptical, but ultimately is forced to consider Zack's claims. Together they attempt to provoke the old man's fragile, piece-meal memory, to find the exact moment and small choice that began the domino effect of Z.T.'s compromise in integrity. As they do, a unique bond forms, as Z.T. comes to value his other relationships from a much different perspective... one that considers the quality of man he becomes, fifty years hence.

Allan Quatermain takes a drug and enters into a dream-world. Strange creatures begin to attack them but they are saved by the arrival of a pulsing electric machine piloted by a man known only as the Time Traveller.
Allan Quatermain, following his "death", returns to his friend, Lady Ragnall, to partake of the taduki drug she has (both are from the Allan Quatermain novels of H. Rider Haggard'sÑreferenced as an author who has written about Quatermain). One point of interest is the fact that, though Quatermain only faked his death, he no longer has a shadow (at least during the first part of the "Sundered Veil"), as shown on the picture in which he is greeted by Lady Ragnall's servant (he seems to retrieve it when entering the Sphinx, though). Quatermain takes the drug and enters into a dream-world, encountering the equally-lost John Carter (from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels) and his grandnephew, Randolph Carter (from H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos). Strange creatures begin to attack them but they are saved by the arrival of a pulsing electric machine piloted by a man known only as the Time Traveller (from H. G. Wells' The Time Machine).
